BACKGROUND: Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is common in intensive care units (ICUs) and is associated with high mortality. Although there have been multiple investigations into a multitude of organ dysfunctions, little is known about the role of liver dysfunction. In addition, clinical and laboratory findings of liver dysfunction may occur with a significant delay. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether a liver function test, based on indocyanine green (ICG)-clearance, contains prognostic information for patients in the early phase of MODS. METHODS: The data of this analysis were based on the MODIFY study, which included 70 critically ill patients of a tertiary medical ICU in the early phase of MODS (≤24 h after diagnosis by an APACHE II score ≥ 20 and a sinus rhythm ≥ 90 beats per minute, with the following subgroups: cardiogenic (cMODS) and septic MODS (sMODS)) over a period of 18 months. ICG clearance was characterized by plasma disappearance rate = PDR (%/min); it was measured non-invasively by using the LiMON system (PULSION Medical Systems, Feldkirchen, Germany). The PDR was determined on the day of study inclusion (baseline) and after 96 h. The primary endpoint of this analysis was 28-day mortality. RESULTS: ICG clearance was measured in 44 patients of the MODIFY trial cohort, of which 9 patients had cMODS (20%) and 35 patients had sMODS (80%). Mean age: 59.7 ± 16.5 years; 31 patients were men; mean APACHE II score: 33.6 ± 6.3; 28-day mortality was 47.7%. Liver function was reduced in the total cohort as measured by a PDR of 13.4 ± 6.3%/min At baseline, there were no relevant differences between survivors and non-survivors regarding ICG clearance (PDR: 14.6 ± 6.1%/min vs. 12.1 ± 6.5%/min; p = 0.21). However, survivors showed better liver function than non-survivors after 96 h (PDR: 21.9 ± 6.3%/min vs. 9.2 ± 6.3%/min, p < 0.05). Consistent with these findings, survivors but not non-survivors show a significant improvement in the PDR (7.3 ± 6.3%/min vs. -2.9 ± 2.6%/min; p < 0.01) within 96 h. In accordance, receiver-operating characteristic curves (ROCs) at 96 h but not at baseline show a link between the PDR and 28-day mortality (PDR at 96 h: AUC: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.76-0.98; p < 0.01. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, we found that ICG clearance at baseline did not provide prognostic information in patients in the early stages of MODS despite being reduced in the total cohort. However, improvement of ICG clearance 96 h after ICU admission is associated with reduced 28-day mortality.

The zoonotic bacterium Coxiella (C.) burnetii can be excreted by infected goats through birth products and milk. The detection of C. burnetii DNA in the mammary gland tissue of infected dairy goats and intermittent milk shedders has been reported, but confirmation of C. burnetii bacteria in the udder remained pending. The pathogen caused abortions in a 152-head dairy goat herd, resulting in the vaccination against C. burnetii of the entire herd with annual boosters. To monitor the C. burnetii shedding at herd level, monthly bulk tank milk (BTM) samples were analyzed using PCR (IS1111). Despite vaccination, C. burnetii DNA was detected in BTM samples within the first 16 months of the study. Therefore, individual milk samples were tested on four different occasions several months apart to identify potential intermittent milk shedders. Only one goat (#67455) tested positive three times. This goat was necropsied to investigate the presence of C. burnetii in the udder and other organs. PCR detected C. burnetii DNA solely in both mammary glands and the left teat cistern. Immunohistological examination identified C. burnetii antigen in mammary gland tissue, confirmed by the detection of C. burnetii bacteria in the mammary epithelial cells using fluorescence in situ hybridization. The removal of goat #67455 led to negative BTM samples until the end of the study. The findings demonstrate the occurrence of C. burnetii in the mammary gland of a naturally infected and vaccinated goat. The presence possibly contributed to intermittent milk shedding of goat #67455, and the mammary gland tissue may serve as a replicative niche for C. burnetii.

Usutu virus (USUV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that is widely distributed in southern and central Europe. The zoonotic virus circulates primarily between birds and mosquitoes, can, however, in rare cases infect other mammals including humans. In the past, USUV has been repeatedly associated with mass mortalities in birds, primarily blackbirds and owls. Birds commonly succumb either due to the peracute nature of the infection or due to severe encephalitis. In Germany, USUV has spread rapidly since its first detection in 2010 in mosquitoes under the presence of susceptible host and vector species. Nonetheless, there is to date limited access to whole genome sequences resulting in the absence of in-depth phylogenetic and phylodynamic analyses. In this study, 118 wild and captive birds were sequenced using a nanopore sequencing platform with prior target enrichment via amplicons. Due to the high abundancy of Europe 3 and Africa 3 in Germany an ample quantity of associated whole genome sequences was generated and the most recent common ancestor could be determined for each lineage. The corresponding clock phylogeny revealed an introduction of USUV Europe 3 and Africa 3 into Germany three years prior to their first isolation in the avifauna in 2011 and 2014, respectively. Based on the clustering and temporal history of the lineages, evidence exists for the genetic evolution of USUV within Germany as well as new introductions thereof into the country.

This systematic review examines moderators and mediators tested in evaluations of stress management interventions for hospital employees to determine their significance for intervention outcomes. To be included, studies had to comprise a moderator or mediator analysis and a quantitative assessment of stress or mental well-being, and to be published in English or German language. Five databases (APA PsycInfo, APA PsycArticles, Embase, Medline, and Web of Science) were searched. Moderators and mediators were categorised thematically and examined using effect direction plots. Study quality was assessed using RoB 2 and ROBINS-I. In fifteen included studies, 22 moderators and ten mediators were identified. Moderators and mediators were categorised into individual psychological factors (14), socio-economic status (6), work situation (5), intervention (3), and duration of employment (3). Two moderators (perceived stressfulness of residency, job control) had a positive, two a negative impact (spirituality, socially desirable responding). One moderator (years of professional experience) had a positive and negative impact. Three moderators measured on categorical scales (gender, profession, and shiftwork) also had effects, favouring women, physicians and night-shift employees. Five mediators (adherence to intervention, mindfulness, non-reactivity to inner experience, total observing, and self-compassion) had a positive impact, while three (isolation, over-identification, psychological inflexibility) had a negative impact. In conclusion, effects of interventions were predominantly driven by individual psychological factors, while the role of other variables seems to be limited. Interventions focussing on primary or tertiary prevention were rare. Also processes through which organisational-level interventions can be most effective have been hardly investigated. Larger and methodologically robust studies are needed to better understand causal pathways and optimise matching of interventions to target groups.

RESUMO

We present the case of Taenia martis metacestode infection in a white-headed lemur (Eulemur albifrons) from a zoological park. A post-mortem examination was conducted on the unexpectedly perished animal and focal granulomatous pneumonia with metacestodic tissue was discovered. Identification of T. martis was conducted through amplification and sequencing of a 12S rRNA gene fragment. We discuss the possible sources of infection and underline the importance of this infection in public health and conservation.

The Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) has been reintroduced successfully in Germany since the 1990s. Since wildlife is an important source of zoonotic infectious diseases, monitoring of invasive and reintroduced species is crucial with respect to the One Health approach. Three Eurasian beavers were found dead in the German federal states of Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Wuerttemberg in 2015, 2021 and 2022, respectively. During post-mortem examinations, Corynebacterium (C.) ulcerans could be isolated from the abscesses of two beavers and from the lungs of one of the animals. Identification of the bacterial isolates at the species level was carried out by spectroscopic analysis using MALDI-TOF MS, FT-IR and biochemical profiles and were verified by molecular analysis based on 16-23S internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region sequencing. Molecular characterization of the C. ulcerans isolates using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) revealed a genome size of about 2.5 Mbp and a GC content of 53.4%. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analysis classified all three isolates as the sequence type ST-332. A minimum spanning tree (MST) based on cgMLST allelic profiles, including 1211 core genes of the sequenced C. ulcerans isolates, showed that the beaver-derived isolates clearly group on the branch of C. ulcerans with the closest relationship to each other, in close similarity to an isolate from a dog. Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed resistance to clindamycin and, in one strain, to erythromycin according to EUCAST, while all isolates were susceptible to the other antimicrobials tested.

Skin fungi are among the most dangerous drivers of global amphibian declines, and few mitigation strategies are known. For Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Chytridiomycota), available treatments rely on temperature, partially combined with antifungal drugs. We report the clearance of B. salamandrivorans in 2 urodelan species using a solely drug-based approach.

BACKGROUND: Professionals in the healthcare sector are a particularly vulnerable group for occupational strain due to high work-related psychological stress. For the implementation of targeted stress-prevention interventions as an important part of a workplace health management programme for all occupational groups and hierarchy levels, information about the current state of their mental health is mandatory. Hence, this study investigated the association of general well-being and different leadership styles among employees in a German tertiary hospital. METHODS: Via an online survey, 10,101 employees were contacted. The final sample consisted of 1137 employees. Of these, 27.7% described themselves as leaders and 72.3% as followers. Most participants were female (74.8%), more than half were under 41 years old. Besides control variables, general well-being (WHO-5) and leadership style (transactional and transformational, laissez-faire and destructive leadership) were assessed. RESULTS: Leaders reported higher well-being scores than followers. Physicians without leadership responsibilities had the lowest scores for well-being. Practitioners of both transformational and transactional leadership were associated with higher well-being scores, while those practicing laissez-faire and destructive leadership had lower scores for almost every professional group. CONCLUSION: Results highlight the necessity for future multimodal health-preventive leadership interventions feature behavioural and organizational intervention modules specifically tailored to hospital professionals at different hierarchical and functional levels to foster the mental health of employees.

Several episodes of increased mortality in wild birds of the families Paridae and Aegithalidae have been documented in recent decades. The majority of affected animals exhibited necrotizing pneumonia with intralesional bacteria. Suttonella (S.) ornithocola, a gram-negative bacterium in the Cardiobacteriaceae family, has been regularly cultured bacteriologically from affected birds and has long been suspected as a potentially fatal cause of respiratory disease in birds. However, a direct causal relationship between this specific bacterium and the observed lesions within birds has not yet been established. Therefore, postmortem tissue from six tits was used in the present study, including three blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) and three great tits (Parus major). Five of the six tits tested positive for S. ornithocola in bacteriological examination and originated from two incidents of increased mortality in Paridae in Germany. Animals found dead in the administrative district of Arnsberg (North Rhine Westphalia) in 2018 and 2020 were investigated for genomic fragments of S. ornithocola by chromogenic in situ hybridization using a newly developed DNA probe based on publicly assessable DNA sequences of the 16S rRNA gene of S. ornithocola. Positive hybridization signals were detected in five out of five animals and were predominantly detected within necrotizing lesions in lung and occasionally in lesions affecting liver and trachea. Interestingly, the lung of one animal without obvious necrotizing pulmonary lesions revealed positive hybridization results in the lumen of one pulmonary blood vessel. Two negative controls, including one bacteriologically S. ornithocola-negative great tit and a cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) suffering from salmonellosis, did not yield positive signals, indicating high sensitivity and specificity of the probe used. This is the first time that S. ornithocola has been clearly identified within necrotizing lesions in deceased tits. Although Koch's postulates have yet to be fulfilled, positive hybridization signals in association with detectable lesions are considered as further and strong evidence of the significant contribution of S. ornithocola to the several episodes of tit mortality recorded in Germany.

In the last fifteen years, an epidemic of canine distemper virus (CDV) with marked neurotropism has occurred in Europe after a longer period of endemic transmission. Many wildlife species have been infected, with red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) being particularly affected. Given that this species is assumed to mediate cross-species CDV infections to domestic and wild animals, tissue samples from foxes with confirmed CDV infection in North-Western Germany were investigated to better understand the neurotropic aspects of the disease. This analysis included histopathology, virus distribution and cell tropism, phenotyping of inflammatory responses and determination of the genotype of the viruses based on the phylogeny of the hemagglutinin (H) gene. The predominant lesion type is gliosis in both gray and white matter areas associated with an accumulation of Iba1+ macrophages/microglia and upregulation of major histocompatibility complex class II molecules in the brain, while sequestration of CD3+ T and Pax5+ B cell in CDV-infected foxes is limited. Demyelination is found in few foxes, characterized by reduced myelin staining with loss of CNPase+ oligodendrocytes in the cerebellar white matter and brainstem. In addition, axonal damage, characterized by ß-amyloid precursor protein expression, is found mainly in these brain regions. In situ hybridization reveals a primary infection of the cerebral and cerebellar gray matter and brain stem. Iba1+ cells and NeuN+ neurons represent the main CDV targets. Sequencing of the CDV H open reading frame from fox tissues reveals that the virus strains belongs to three different sub-lineages of the Europe-1/South America-1 genotype, suggesting independent transmission lines.

In both a Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) and a great tit (Parus major), found dead in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, intranuclear inclusion bodies were observed in the kidneys during the histologic examination. Siadenoviruses were detected in both samples, and the nucleotide sequence of the partial DNA polymerase, obtained from the blue tit, was almost identical with that of great tit adenovirus type 1, reported from Hungary previously. The sequence, derived from the German great tit sample was more similar to great tit adenovirus 2, yet divergent enough to forecast the possible establishment of a novel viral type and species. Therefore, the complete genome was subjected to next generation sequencing. The annotation revealed a typical siadenoviral genome layout, and phylogenetic analyses proved the distinctness of the novel virus type: great tit adenovirus 3. We propose the establishment of a new species (Siadenovirus carbocapituli) within the genus Siadenovirus to contain great tit adenovirus types 2 and 3. As both of the newly-detected viruses originated from histologically confirmed cases, and several siadenoviruses have been associated with avian nephritis earlier, we assume that the renal pathology might have been also of adenoviral origin. Additionally, we performed structural studies on two virus-coded proteins. The viral sialidase and the fiber knob were modeled using the AlphaFold2 program. According to the results of the sialic acid docking studies, the fiber trimer of the new great tit adenovirus 3 binds this acid with good affinity. As sialic acid is expressed in the kidney, it can be hypothesized that it is used during the receptor binding and entry of the virus. Strong binding of sialic acid was also predictable for the viral sialidase albeit its enzymatic activity remains disputable since, within its catalytic site, an asparagine residue was revealed instead of the conserved aspartic acid.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is an animal morbillivirus belonging to the family Paramyxoviridae and has caused major epizootics with high mortality levels in susceptible wildlife species. In recent years, the documented genetic diversity of CDV has expanded, with new genotypes identified in India, the Caspian Sea, and North America. However, no quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) that has been validated for the detection of all genotypes of CDV is currently available. We have therefore established and characterized a pan-genotypic probe-based RT-qPCR assay based on the detection of a conserved region of the phosphoprotein (P) gene of CDV. This assay has been validated using virus strains representative of six genotypes of CDV in different sample types, including frozen tissue, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue sections, and virus isolates. The primers and probe target sequences were sufficiently conserved to also enable detection of the phocine distemper virus strains responsible for epizootics in harbor seals in the North Sea in 1988 and 2002. Comparison with two recently published RT-qPCR assays for CDV showed that under equivalent conditions the primers and probe set reported in this study were more sensitive in detecting nucleic acids from an Asia-4 genotype, which displays sequence variation in primer and probe binding sites. In summary, this validated new pan-genotypic RT-qPCR assay will facilitate screening of suspected distemper cases caused by novel genotypes for which full genome sequences are unavailable and have utility in detecting multiple CDV strains in geographical regions where multiple genotypes cocirculate in wildlife.

Despite the increasing frequency of avian influenza (AI) cases in wild birds in Europe during the last decade, doves and pigeons were not recognized to be part of the AI epidemiology. Here we describe a natural, lethal HPAIV infection of subtype H5N1, clade 2.3.4.4b, in a wood pigeon (Columba palumbus) in Germany, 2022. The animal was housed in a bird sanctuary that suffered an HPAI-outbreak with multiple bird species affected. The pigeon's post mortem findings were dominated by an acute lymphohistiocytic meningoencephalitis as well as neuronal necrosis in the grey matter of the cerebral hemispheres and in the brain stem. Influenza A viral antigen was associated to these alterations with a striking ependymal and periventricular distribution most probably indicating intraventicular liquorogenic spread of the virus. In addition, typical severe multifocal to coalescing necrotizing pancreatitis was evident. Occasionally, vascular endothelial cells showed an intense viral antigen staining. Examination of oropharyngeal and cloacal swabs and of various tissues by real-time RT-PCR corroborated systemic infection with highly pathogenic (HP) AIV of subtype H5N1. Viral loads soared in brain and pancreas samples. Full genome sequencing directly from brain tissue confirmed the assignment of the virus to clade 2.3.4.4b of the goose/Guangdong lineage bearing a polybasic hemagglutinin cleavage site. Our results demonstrate the principal susceptibility of wood pigeons to HPAIV H5N1 resulting in a sporadic infection. Considering the wide distribution and roaming of wild, feral, and racing pigeons with often close contact to humans, thorough investigation of suspected cases including pathological manifestation is advisable.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with an increased mortality in critically ill patients, especially in patients with multiorgan dysfunction syndrome (MODS). In daily clinical practice, the grading of AKI follows the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria. In most cases, a relevant delay occurs frequently between the onset of AKI and detectable changes in creatinine levels as well as clinical symptoms. The aim of the present study was to examine whether a near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-based, non-invasive ischemia-reperfusion test (vascular occlusion test (VOT)) together with unprovoked (under resting conditions) tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) measurements, contain prognostic information in the early stage of MODS regarding the developing need for renal replacement therapy (RRT). METHODS: Within a period of 18 months, patients at the medical intensive care unit of a tertiary university hospital with newly developed MODS (≤24 h after diagnosis, APACHE II score ≥20) were included in our study. The VOT occlusion slope (OS) and recovery slope (RS) were recorded in addition to unprovoked StO2. StO2 was determined non-invasively in the area of the thenar muscles using a bedside NIRS device. The VOT was carried out by inflating a blood pressure cuff on the upper arm. AKI stages were determined by the changes in creatinine levels, urinary output, and/or the need for RRT according to KDIGO. RESULTS: 56 patients with MODS were included in the study (aged 62.5 ± 14.4 years, 40 men and 16 women, APACHE II score 34.5 ± 6.4). Incidences of the different AKI stages were: no AKI, 16.1% (n = 9); AKI stage I, 19.6% (n = 11); AKI stage II, 25% (n = 14); AKI stage III, 39.3% (n = 22). Thus, 39.3% of the patients (n = 22) developed the need for renal replacement therapy (AKI stage III). These patients had a significantly higher mortality over 28 days (RRT, 72% (n = 16/22) vs. no RRT, 44% (n = 15/34); p = 0.03). The mean unprovoked StO2 of all patients at baseline was 81.7 ± 11.1%, and did not differ between patients with or without the need for RRT. Patients with RRT showed significantly weaker negative values of the OS (-9.1 ± 3.7 vs. -11.7 ± 4.1%/min, p = 0.01) and lower values for the RS (1.7 ± 0.9 vs. 2.3 ± 1.6%/s, p = 0.02) compared to non-dialysis patients. Consistent with these results, weaker negative values of the OS were found in higher AKI stages (no AKI, -12.7 ± 4.1%/min; AKI stage I, -11.5 ± 3.0%/min; AKI stage II, -11.1 ± 3.3%/min; AKI stage III, -9.1 ± 3.7%/min; p = 0.021). Unprovoked StO2 did not contain prognostic information regarding the AKI stages. CONCLUSIONS: The weaker negative values of the VOT parameter OS are associated with an increased risk of developing AKI and RRT, and increased mortality in the early phase of MODS, while unprovoked StO2 does not contain prognostic information in that regard.

OBJECTIVE: Workplace exposures are considered to be high in hospital staff. Workplace interventions might be an appropriate way to reduce workplace exposures. Therefore, views of hospital staff on reasons and implications of workplace exposures were assessed and consequences for workplace interventions were considered. METHODS: Six focus groups and seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with 34 members of hospital staff in total. Qualitative Content Analysis was performed. RESULTS: Stress occurs due to a lack of personnel, high workload, missing common-rooms for breaks and lunch, missing communication, a lack of clarity in work processes, team conflicts and a lack of appreciation. Social support, work breaks, reduction of working hours, physical activity and empowerment were mentioned as factors leading to stress reduction. CONCLUSION: Possible stress reduction by means of problem-related coping and emotional coping depending on hospital structure and culture.

Canine kobuvirus (CaKV) is a globally distributed pathogen of dogs and is predominantly associated with infection of the gastrointestinal tract. However, an etiological link to enteric disease has not been established since CaKV has been identified in both asymptomatic dogs and animals with diarrheic symptoms. In this study, an extraintestinal CaKV infection was detected by next-generation sequencing in a fox (Vulpes vulpes) in Germany concomitant with a canine distemper virus (canine morbillivirus; CDV) co-infection. Phylogenetic analysis of the complete coding region sequence showed that this strain was most closely related to a CaKV strain detected in a dog in the United Kingdom in 2008. The tissue and cellular tropism of CaKV was characterized by the detection of viral antigens and RNA. CaKV RNA was detected by in situ hybridization in different tissues, including epithelial cells of the stomach and ependymal cells in the brain. The use of a new RT-qPCR assay for CaKV confirmed the systemic distribution of CaKV with viral RNA also detected in the lymph nodes, bladder, trachea, and brain. The detection of a CDV infection in this fox suggests that immunosuppression should be further investigated as a contributing factor to the enhanced extraintestinal spread of CaKV.

Usutu virus (USUV) is a zoonotic arbovirus causing avian mass mortalities. The first outbreak in North-Western Germany occurred in 2018. This retrospective analysis focused on combining virological and pathological findings in birds and immunohistochemistry. 25 common blackbirds, one great grey owl, and one kingfisher collected from 2011 to 2018 and positive for USUV by qRT-PCR were investigated. Macroscopically, most USUV infected birds showed splenomegaly and hepatomegaly. Histopathological lesions included necrosis and lymphohistiocytic inflammation within spleen, Bursa fabricii, liver, heart, brain, lung and intestine. Immunohistochemistry revealed USUV antigen positive cells in heart, spleen, pancreas, lung, brain, proventriculus/gizzard, Bursa fabricii, kidney, intestine, skeletal muscle, and liver. Analysis of viral genome allocated the virus to Europe 3 or Africa 2 lineage. This study investigated whether immunohistochemical detection of double-stranded ribonucleic acid (dsRNA) serves as an alternative tool to detect viral intermediates. Tissue samples of six animals with confirmed USUV infection by qRT-PCR but lacking viral antigen in liver and spleen, were further examined immunohistochemically. Two animals exhibited a positive signal for dsRNA. This could indicate either an early state of infection without sufficient formation of virus translation products, occurrence of another concurrent virus infection or endogenous dsRNA not related to infectious pathogens and should be investigated in more detail in future studies.

Swinepox virus (SWPV) is a globally distributed swine pathogen that causes sporadic cases of an acute poxvirus infection in domesticated pigs, characterized by the development of a pathognomonic proliferative dermatitis and secondary ulcerations. More severe disease with higher levels of morbidity and mortality is observed in congenitally SWPV-infected neonatal piglets. In this study, we investigated the evolutionary origins of SWPV strains isolated from domestic pigs and wild boar. Analysis of whole genome sequences of SWPV showed that at least two different virus strains are currently circulating in Germany. These were more closely related to a previously characterized North American SWPV strain than to a more recent Indian SWPV strain and showed a variation in the SWPV-specific genome region. A single nucleotide deletion in the wild boar (wb) SWPV strain leads to the fusion of the SPV019 and SPV020 open reading frames (ORFs) and encodes a new hypothetical 113 aa protein (SPVwb020-019). In addition, the domestic pig (dp) SWPV genome contained a novel ORF downstream of SPVdp020, which encodes a new hypothetical 71aa protein (SPVdp020a). In summary, we show that SWPV strains with altered coding capacity in the SWPV specific genome region are circulating in domestic pig and wild boar populations in Germany.

In most general education classrooms in Germany, students with and without special educational needs are taught together. To support teachers in adapting instruction to these heterogeneous classrooms, we have developed learning progress assessment (LPA) and reading instructional materials, the Reading Sportsman (RS), in line with the theoretical framework of data-based decision-making, which has led to beneficial effects in several studies. However, data from these studies have not been analyzed to examine effects for low-performing readers. Data within and across six quasi-experimental studies conducted by our team in Grades 2 to 4 were reanalyzed to examine the effects of LPA on students whose reading fluency scores were at or below the 25th percentile (n = 1,346 students from 264 classes). In each study, students had been assigned to a control group (with business-as-usual instruction), an LPA group only, or an LPA-RS group (i.e., with teachers provided with LPA and the RS). Separate multilevel regression results were integrated by means of meta-analytical methods to investigate the consistency of results. Overall, findings from the single studies indicated no positive effects of LPA with or without the RS compared with the control group. The integrated analyses showed small positive effect trends on reading fluency and intrinsic reading motivation.
